Sorry for the delay. I'll try to finish part II before the season starts. Work commitments and a general sense of malaise that the summer is going to be over have prevented me from writing the draft grades. Got some better news tonight so I'm motivated a bit more now.
Sportsline has a new feature that tracks the amount of time each person took for a round and overall. The slowest was Larry, but that was excusable since there was lag between Bill calling out the picks and Hai making them. However, the second slowest was Kevin in the turnaround spot, he should have been faster. Fastest to the draw was Donny, which either means he was very well-prepared or didn't give a flying fark about his picks.
This year, it seems the Olympics and travel plans prevented deep research for many. But that may have led to safer drafting. Most picks were straightforward and solid. I don't think there were any "reach" homer picks. Also, no questionable draft-day trades. Only one team went wild on a drunken rampage (looking at you Andrew).
I've been reading my previous blog draft grades and logs. It's almost embarrassing how wrong I can be in hindsight. I gave Tuna a C last season and he drafted Brady and Moss. However, I did give Kevin a B+ grade (tied for highest draft grade) and liked Andrew's picks last year. And the year before that, I gave myself a B+ instead of an A- only to avoid accusations of favoritism. Moral of the story: Hope for a B+ score, but don't get mad if you get a C....
Andrew
The Good: Stealing Derek Anderson from Kevin. Unfortunately, Andrew didn't stop while the going was good.
The Bad: Probably picked the Jaguars in the heat of the moment while watching them destroy his beloved Redskins. Solid D pick, just maybe 1 or 2 rounds too early.
The Ugly: Four QBs is two too many. I put the over/under at 3 weeks where his starting QB will score negative or single digit points and one of his 3 bench QBs score 20+. Not only will there be huge inefficiencies in Andrew's scoring, it's very hard to use QBs as trade bait in FADUCO. RBs are much more valuable trading commodities.
Draft Grade: D+
Overall Grade: C
Bill
The Good: Didn't shoot himself in the foot by trying to trade draft picks and not fully realizing the benefit of the earlier pick. Jericho Cotchery has tremendous upside with Favre throwing him the ball. Also, Bill wisely filled his roster spots according to need before reaching for sleepers. An honest night's work that complemented his keepers well.
The Bad: Depth at WR is very thin. However, there's always some decent Free Agents available at the first half of the season. Not that big of a concern.
The Ugly: Bill's minions may now think he's an ugly American who cares more for that silly Gweilo sport than he does for work.
Draft Grade: B
Overall Grade: A-
Donny
The Good: Well, Donny was very efficient in his use of time. More seriously, he's really stacked at WR now. Donny has truly sensed the NFL's shift towards passing-centric offenses and drafted accordingly. Expect 3 WR starters to be a common occurrence with this team. Also, by having 4 tier 1/tier 2 WRs, he has good trade currency in case the ugly happens.
The Bad: Back-to-back QB picks usually mean no clear cut starter. Hasselbeck and Delhomme are coin flips, may as well let Dexter pick the starter for each week if both are playing.
The Ugly: Donny is probably the thinnest team at the running back position. Even though the NFL is passing more, there has yet to be a FADUCO champion who only had one pro-bowl caliber RB. Depth is poor, as Rudi Johnson is now a backup in Detroit. If Ryan Grant goes down, Donny is very vulnerable.
Draft: B-
Overall Grade: B
Hai
The Good: That was some quality bathroom time for Hai on Sunday. He took my Pro Football Prospectus 2008 book into the crapper and must have made good use of it during my party. For 3 straight chances in rounds 1, 3, and 5, he stole my #1 queued player. Four of Hai's first 5 picks are potential keeper material. He also has a good mix of very young up-and-comers and very old proven players.
The Bad: Tight Ends are a bit vanilla. Hai also has 3 QBs who all can explode for 20+ points. Like Andrew, he'll have a tough time juggling his QBs to avoid leaving the big scorer on the bench during a week.
The Ugly: As promised, Hai's grade will go down one notch for his refusal to believe in the Madden Curse. Hai,even the Cowboys only carry 2 QBs on their roster.
Draft Grade: A-
Overall Grade: B+
Katy
The Good: It's certainly a bold move, having the jones for Jones (Julius, Thomas, and Felix). I'm not sure it's a coincidental thing. On the QB side, Rodgers is not a bad backup to McNabb. As usual, there was some play for the Philly offense and she got to pick up the "hot and trendy" Desean Jackson.
The Bad. Running backs are still a weak link for Katy. The Jones boys would be fine in yardage league, but FADUCO leans towards TD production a bit more. I don't think there is stud RB in the roster. Vikings were a bit of a reach in the 3rd round.
The Ugly. Vikings weren't the only reach. K Phil Dawson went in the 9th round. Judging by the 10th pick of Tatum Bell, however, the 9th pick didn't seem too bad. There just doesn't seem to be much upside in the WR/RB slots. The vets don't have a sterling history and the rookies will be hard-pressed to put up pro-bowl level numbers this season.
