Midseason Trade Analysis

Analysis of Trades Through the Midseason

Due to some clamor for an article about the FADUCO trades so far this year, I’m going to come up with some Vic Guru analysis. For the grading system, I’m using golf scoring analogies: Eagle (no, not that kind of Eagle Kevin and Bill), Birdie, Par, Bogey, Vic Meltdown

Draft-day trade: Victor gets #7 overall and 12th rnd pick from Tuna in exchange for #8 overall and 5th round pick.

Victor – Bogey. Mike Anderson has been a solid pick so far, he’s the 2nd best RB chosen in the first round in terms of points production. (I’ll ignore the little detail on who the best RB chosen in the draft is). However, Victor would have had him at #8 anyway, as Tuna had Brown rated higher. Victor gave away a free pick to Tuna, which boosted Tuna's confidence entering the season and launched Tuna's elevated perception for his team this season.

Tuna – Par. Tuna didn’t quite steal this trade, though. True, he got Warrick Dunn with Vic’s official pick, but Tuna would have selected Dunn anyway over Lee Evans (Tuna’s official pick) if he didn’t have the extra pick. Nowhere close to Bill and Andrew’s 2003/2004 draft day trade impact.

Week 2: Victor gets Antawn Randle-El from Andrew in exchange for Chris Cooley.

Victor – Bogey. Randle-El was cut a couple of weeks after the trade, though having Chris Cooley would not have helped Victor last week when he needed him for bye purposes. The stumble here was thinking Courtney Anderson was superior, so Cooley was expendable.

Andrew – Birdie. Got a Redskins player who is now a starter. Cooley contributed to Andrew’s week 5 and 6 wins. Cooley has cooled down a bit lately (sorry bad pun), but is still better than most of the other FA TEs out there.

Week 5: Victor gets Steve Steve and Kevan Barlow from Donny in exchange for Jamal Lewis and Andre Johnson.

Victor – Birdie. 3rd time is a charm for Victor, as he scores the league’s top performing WR and a viable backup RB and only had to give up a disappointing RB and a total season bust WR. Unfortunately, the addition of Smith has not been enough to get Victor in the W column, he’s 0-3 since getting Smith, so that prevents him from getting an Eagle.

Donny – Vic Meltdown. Jamal only has started once for Donny, and Andre Johnson has gotten as many points as George would have if George was on the Texans roster. Though interestingly, getting a bad trade hasn’t hurt Donny’s W-L as much. He’s 2-1 since the trade and Victor’s reverse-jinx comments about him looking ahead to the next season.

Week 5: Tuna gets Lamont Jordan from Bill in exchange for Eli Manning.

Tuna – Eagle. Lamont has blown up since week 6, he’s the top-scoring RB in the past 3 weeks. Talk about great timing for Tuna. Jordan has also allowed Tuna to shrug off the loss of Deuce, and further solidified his position as the top Asian. It will be interesting to see which of the 4 RBs (McGahee, Deuce, Jordan, and Ronnie Brown) Tuna decides not to keep –they will all be either 1st-round or 2nd- round worthy in Non-Keeper drafts next year. Knowing Tuna, however, he’ll try to move one of them before the trading deadline to shore up the suddenly iffy WR spots.

Bill – Birdie. This is an example of a trade that helped both sides. Bill is on a 3-0 run since acquiring Eli. He now can simultaneously start two viable QBs, one of whom does do some running here and now. Oh yeah, LT also passes better than Mike Vick, so I guess San Diego gets a grade of Eagle on that real-life trade (LT and Brees for Vick). Speaking of San Diego, I hear rumors that Bill is looking to acquire McCardell and Eric Parker to complete the whole set. Manning is a potential keeper for Bill, so this is a good trade for him.

Week 7: Tuna gets Roy Williams from PJ in exchange for Warrick Dunn

Tuna – Par. Though Roy hasn’t contributed to Tuna, he’ll start earning his pay this week, as Tuna’s main WR starters are questionable or worse. Tuna, with his logjam at RBs, could also afford to give up Dunn. Tuna demonstrated foresight on this trade by trading for WR depth, it is now up to Williams to deliver.

PJ – Birdie. Dunn gave PJ 10 pts the only week he was able to start, which was nice. With Cadillac still possibly hurting, PJ gets some breathing room also. On the flip side, this could lead to continued inefficiencies if PJ makes the wrong call on who to bench out of K Jones, Dunn, Cadillac, and Dillon and the benched player explodes.

You forgot to grade my Todd Heap for Chris Brown trade with Tuna.

Sorry, that was during the preseason, so I forgot about it. I'd give you a Bogey since you are hurting for TEs and haven't had to use Brown. I give a Par for Tuna since Heap is still starting for him, though he hasn't been that great.
