What's up with consultants

OK, I'm sure they get paid handsomely, but here in my workplace, we have about a dozen to 20 of them. There are about 6 of them next to my department. It seems like they are treated as outcasts here, no one really interacts with them. Maybe I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem like a fulfilling profession. Some of them also have to share a conference room table as their workspace, and that conference room is completely transparent, so they have no privacy. Ugh! There may be one who's a cute Asian chick, but I don't know if I'm allowed to socialize with these creatures. Some of them are external auditors, so I guess they have to maintain an arm's reach. Like my boss said, "I'm sure they're very nice people, but I have no interest in knowing them". I'm not sure how much value they bring to a company asides from being an independent verification arm. I guess Donny has been on that end before, what is everyone's opinion of consulting?

I think they are a great asset to society and they are all grossly underpaid.
